Escape to the Oasis of the High Atlas
While the Atlantic swell provides endless thrills along the coast, no trip to Tamraght is complete without a day trip inland into the dramatic gorges of Paradise Valley (known in Amazigh as Tamraght River Gorge). Carved over millennia by the descending waters of the High Atlas foothills, this stunning natural oasis features emerald-green freshwater rock pools, towering limestone cliffs, and lush canopies of date palms and olive trees.
Located just 45 minutes inland from The Cove Surf House, Paradise Valley offers the ultimate post-surf recovery excursion. Here is your complete guide to hiking, cliff jumping, dining, and navigating this breathtaking canyon.
How to Get to Paradise Valley from Tamraght
Paradise Valley is located roughly 35 kilometers northeast of Tamraght, winding through the scenic Honey Route (Route du Miel) celebrated for its wild thyme and argan oil cooperatives:
- Surf House Excursion (Recommended): At The Cove, we run weekly guided group excursions in our private vans. This includes roundtrip transport, an experienced local guide who knows the deepest pools for safe swimming, and a traditional riverside lunch.
- Renting a Car or Scooter: The drive is fully paved until the main parking lot. Take the coastal road south to Aourir, then turn inland on the P1001 route toward Imouzzer Ida Outanane.
- Grand Taxi: Take a shared Grand Taxi from Aourir roundabout toward Alma and Imouzzer, asking to be dropped off at the Paradise Valley parking lot.
The Hike: Navigating the Gorge
From the parking lot, the trail descends down a series of dirt paths and stone steps into the riverbed:
- The Approach (15 to 20 minutes): The initial walk crosses shallow streams and passes rustic Berber cafes with plastic chairs set directly inside the ankle-deep flowing water.
- The Lower Pools: As the canyon narrows, you will reach the first set of wide limestone pools. These are great for a refreshing swim, but tend to see the highest density of day-trippers.
- The Upper Gorges (30 to 45 minutes): For the true adventure, continue hiking past the lower section up the gorge trail. Here, the canyon walls shoot hundreds of feet into the sky, revealing secluded turquoise pools, smooth natural waterslides, and deep plunge basins.
Cliff Jumping Safety: What You Must Know
Paradise Valley is famous on social media for daring cliff jumpers leaping from heights of 5 to 15 meters. However, water levels fluctuate dramatically throughout the year based on seasonal rainfall. Crucial rule: Never jump into any pool without first swimming down to inspect the depth and ensuring there are no submerged limestone boulders beneath the surface. Always follow the guidance of a knowledgeable local guide.
Dining Along the Riverbed
One of the greatest charms of Paradise Valley is the culinary experience. Throughout the canyon, local Berber families have established open-air kitchens where claypot chicken and vegetable tajines simmer slowly over hot charcoal embers. Ordering a bubbling tajine upon arrival ensures it will be piping hot and ready for you right after your morning hike and swim.
What to Pack for Paradise Valley
- Sturdy Footwear: Wear trail sneakers or water sandals with strong grip. The limestone rocks around the water become polished and remarkably slippery when wet.
- Swimwear & Quick-Dry Towel: Wear your swimsuit beneath your clothes for easy transitions.
- Cash in Moroccan Dirhams (MAD): There are no ATMs in the valley. Bring small bills for parking fees (10-20 MAD), fresh orange juice (15 MAD), and tajines (60-80 MAD).
- Sun Protection: The canyon traps heat. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat.
